There must be something wonderfully and magically contagious about the UB40 reggae beat when it can make a bitter winter's night in Letchworth feel like Kingston Town, but that's just what sensational tribute act Johnny 2 Bad managed to do for a capacity Plinston crowd on 21 January. Seldom in my memory have notoriously conservative (small "c") Letchworthians been tempted onto their collective dancing feet from the opening number - which, for the record was the aptly named "Here I Am". Contagion became mesmerism in the company of this charismatic band who served up on a silver tray a highly intoxicating musical cocktail with a sparkling stage presence that sounded as good as it looked. And no-one was searching for the antidote as one by lilting one, Johnny 2 Bad hoisted the colours proudly to the top of the Plinston mast with Can't Help Falling in Love, Pass The Deutche, Rat in the Kitchen, One in Ten, Be My Baby and by the time we got to the ubiquitous Red Red Wine, I could almost smell the coconut oil and feel the sand between my toes. Gavin THE ROBIN 2 BILSTON JULY 10 2010 - 2010-06-12 What a great night in every way, the weather, the venue, the support act and of course JOHNNY 2 BAD, who really do get better every time I see them ( which is approx twice a year as i'm stuck down in deepest worcestershire and they dont play near us enough ) A group of 6 of us booked up quite late as we didnt know if England would still be in the World Cup, and in hidsight im glad they werent as I would have missed this show, we arrived nice an early for a few sherbuts and then heard the sounds of some reggae classics played by a really entertaining act called Mr Bojangles, he throughly warmed up the crowd and a great decision by who ever to have him do so... so by the time J2B came on we were hot, duely watered and ready to go mental...I dont know if its the venue or the vibe the band give off from there stage prescence ( as they all seem to be having great fun up there as well ) but you really forget this is a tribute band ....it is like seeing a fully fledged signed band with there own hits as they give the Ub40 songs a life of there own ( no disrepect to ub40 by the way who I love ) but the show is non stop for 90 minutes and the crowd were chanting for more, louder than I have ever heard in such a long time....a real great occasion, im sure the band must have felt the love for them.... to many songs to mention, but standout for me was the opener Here I AM, the ska version of Please Dont make me cry and Rats in the Kitchen which took the roof of the venue, they even dropped an Oasis track in the encore which was amazing and worked well, my friend commented that she didnt know Ub40 had done an oasis track....??? well lets say if they did, they could do no better than choose the one J2B did.... It came about from my sister telling me about you after seeing you in darlaston just before christmas with her boyfriend and best friend and family. She told me about the wolvo gig and that they would all be returning because of how good you were. So twenty quid later me and the missus have a ticket, soon to be joined by mom and dad(who are young at heart), thinking it would be a welcome night out at the end of a long miserable january, I had no idea what was to come! Now i'm a lover of live music not in any way a mass collector or a rolling stone critic, nor do i tour the live circuit as to make a 'review' as such, i'm just your average joe who had a brief encounter with the ability to play an instrument in my younger years(i'm 33 in physical age)and i loved it, truly. Sadly much to my regret this is a talent i no longer possess, however the appreciation of a good singer, people who can play an instrument or a band is something i've always had, a personal connection and admiration. Many people feel the same i know. It must be noted that i had no idea how big you guys were you just don't expect it at those venues, of course after some web sessions i am now fully aware of your pedigree and it makes complete sense. Anyway we arrived at seven to get a decent seat(for a good view)and joined some friends at the front, not that this eventually mattered. After a few stellas and a couple of quick fags you came on stage picked up your instruments and after a quick check it was 1,2,3,4 bang, the intro of here i am totally nailed. By the second song the dance floor was full, we were on it and seats were pointless. My folks were strutting away(It was like something off cocoon). And there's me swinging the missus about who only usually dances for tips(joke). singing just Homely girl to her like i'm live at the 02! Labour of love II was the soundtrack to my summer of 1990, a good year, i was tickling the ivories, scoring goals for fun and a couple of girls even liked me! and when groovin started i had a flashback to the school trip to france, sat on a coach, driving through paris past the eiffel tower and such like totally oblivious, a wolves scarf wrapped around my head walkman full blast groovin out on life!! Thanks guys. In between all the dancing and drinking and general rocking time we were having i remember looking up and seeing everyone else in the room having the same kick ass time, dancing on tables, singing for england. Awesome! It is without doubt the best band i've seen live and it won't be the last, if i see you guys a couple of times again this year i know i'll be able to say i had three brilliant nights out in 2010! Only two regrets the first i never bought you all a beer and i forgot to buy the c.d both courtesy of the fact i was pi**ed and knackered! I'll put that right next time. I went to see the band at the Coach & Horses in Strood Kent with my Cousin as we had heard soo much about them on the Official Ali Campbell forum and although we were BOTH a little Apprehensive at first we thought they would be worth a listen. As the band came out the line up looked impresive enough to start with but still without expecting TOOO much we waited on (as OLD UB40 fans since the 70s we both thought this would be a wasted journey). The crowd gave a large show of appreciation as The Front Man Wayne Lawrence stepped up to the Mic and introduced the Band and then much to our Amazement the SOUND that we heard was none other than PURE CLASS. As the first song kicked in we looked at eachother with the same smirk on our faces to the surprise of a MASSIVE Dub 'UB' sound that we remember from the early days As EVERY song of the set came and passed we had come from standing and bobbing our heads to Full blown Skanking on the dance floor with no care of anybody else in the venue (they may have well been doing a sound check to an empty room for all we cared). As the first half of the set came to an end and the Band had a MUCH deserved break (due to the energetic performances they ALL gave) i found myself talking about them to a 20 something yr old fella in the Gents and asking what he thought of them, as he was much younger than myself and hes 'UB' knowledge of the old days was sparce i found myself educating him on the sheer Talent that THE WHOLE BAND had shown in the first half the second half of the set was EVEN more Buzzing (as if it could) as the band did medleys that Ali & the 'OLD' 'UB' would be proud of even throwing in their own versions of, "my girl lollipop" and "pass the dutchy". I am Pleased to say that Myself and My Cousin were "BLOWN AWAY" and anybody thinking of going to see the band then think no-more and just go and do. Location: Rochester And their mini bus turned up in my neck of the woods last night. So i locked up Castle Rochester, and went across to the Coach And Horses to have a gander at why people on here and on "The Truman Show" rate them so highly........ And what can i say that hasn't been already! These boys are the dogs bollox, with a set that just blew me away! In the lead singer i thought it was gonna be someone trying to bring that unique sound that only Ali can... But no, he does it in his own way! And that way brings so much life to what they do! He sounds nothing like Ali, and he doesn't try and be Ali! He is himself and brings a different kind of vocal to the UB sound that's fresh and sounded fckn awesome! They were billed as Johnny Too Bad "The UK's best UB40 tribute band" And choosing my words very carefully i would go as far as to say, they put NUB40 in the shade by a very long way! I would love to see them support Ali and DEP on the next tour. So much as i hate the fact that Ali will not do the great songs that made me fall in love with UB40 at the shows and i do understand why he can't, as the promoters would insist that most of his show consists of the more commercial songs. Coz that's what the majority of the people at the gigs go for. But it would be just the best show for me if J2B supported and did some of the songs that Ali is not gonna do? I saw it mentioned on "The Truman Show" once, and that is never gonna happen coz they will upstage them by a very long way! I can't big up these boys enough, I only went out of curiosity and ended up cutting the rug for 2 hours! At the end of the gig Wayne had a few words for me and my cuz Hennessy, thanking us for our support coz we was singing and right the way through it! He was very appreciative, something that has been lost by 2 certain people elsewhere!....? But i have to say it was coz i couldn't help myself! I thank him and the rest of J2B for bringing a great show to my neck of the woods! They're back in March i think he said to somewhere nearby, and all i can say is so will i! It was decided that we would contact the band too see if it was feasible to have them at the Electric Club for an evening. This evening was held Saturday 3rd October and I really wish we had contacted the Echo beforehand to ask you to send a representative. JOHNNY 2 BAD are billed as a UB40 tribute band, but that is an understatement!! They were brilliant, not only the music that they played but the pure enthusiasm and energy that they put into their performance. Within 2 minutes of them coming onto the stage everyone was up and dancing, and the only time the dance floor was empty was when the band had their 25min break and even then they came out to have a drink and a chat with the audience. Which went down well with all concerned. The comments after the event were all so positive, a lot of people who had come just for an evening out and didn’t particularly enjoy UB40 music were raving about a brilliant night. We had people from Southampton who had come to see the group and were raving about the Electric club and how nice and friendly all the people were. The reason for writing in is firstly to thank Bournemouth Electric Club committee for holding this evening and for all the hard work that they put into trying to make the Club a success, and secondly to say if anyone has the chance to see JOHNNY 2 BAD, please go because they are well worth seeing or booking , the members at the Electric Club are already planning a return visit for the Band!! Needless to say we danced our Dresses, Socks and Shoes off ALL night long from Start to finish. First half of show was their own XOVA set, Just sheer MAGIC is what could be said Showcasing tracks from the forthcoming NEW album. We need more XOVA gigs by the way guys...ANYONE WHO ORGANISES GIGS, FESTIVALS FOR NEW ACTS.. SHOULD BOOK THESE GUYS as soon as possible. THEY ARE AWESOME!!!... Second part of the gig was the J2B set and seeing them perform the UB40 songs for the first time Just blew me and my mates away...it has to be said that this band is the real deal, and we all think UB40 should be proud of them. REGGAE RESCUE REMEDY - PLINSTON HALL OFFICIAL REVIEW - 2008-02-04 REGGAE’S RESCUE REMEDY UB40 tribute band Johnny 2 Bad played Plinston on 25th January. This review for Plinston Live by Denis Hill. It was announced in the national media during the days leading up to this show, that this was officially the most depressing week of the year. I don’t know how they measure such things, but it must have been something to do with post-Christmas malaise, drab weather and shortage of cash. Could Johnny 2 Bad lift the January gloom? We’d just have to suck it and see, but if the outrageous hype quoted in the pre-show publicity: “One of the best shows I’ve ever seen” (Greg Allen – The Stage), was anything to go by, then not even this ambitious task should be beyond them. As I took my seat in a comfortably full, if not capacity, concert hall, I had to confess to a certain scepticism. I am not reggae music’s greatest devotee and find the genre rather banal and samey. How wrong I was to be as this Birmingham-based eight piece sucked the dancers up onto the dance floor from the very first track (unheard of in Letchworth) in a four-beat and brassy intro, featuring James Renford’s seductive sax-playing. Groovin’ (‘til I Die) was an early triumph and as we hot-stepped into Beautiful Woman, the infectious rhythm and highly visual stage presence tempted even more dancers to the floor – and the aisles and the doorways! Other high points of a barnstorming first set were The Only Love I Need (complete with synchronized dance moves by the three-man white-suited brass section) and If it Happens Again I’m Leaving, a track which demonstrated the tightness and spot-on timing so important to the reggae heartbeat. And I must mention the super little trio which closed the first set, consisting of Stick By Me (And I’ll Stick By You) Here I am Baby Take a Chance on Me (I’ll Love You ‘til the End of Time) All serving to confirm the impressively Campbell-esque vocals of Wayne Lawrence and superb musicianship of his UB40 ‘co-workers’. Into the second set and the band quickly and cleverly re-established their terrific first half rapport with an audience walk which beautifully emphasised the lilt and pulse of the gig. Rat in The Kitchen which followed was as pulsating as Sweet Sensation was captivating. I’ll be Yours (Baby Tonight) provided ample evidence of Skins’ drumming credentials and this number pitched us headlong into the Andy Williams inspired Can’t Help Falling In Love, expertly handled. The obvious social and political content of One In Ten was nicely sugar-coated and here let me pay tribute to the talents of keys man Mickey Nanton and bassist ‘Boot’ whose respective contributions on the night were sublime. Even the door stewards were foot-tapping during Kingston Town and the band’s signature track Johnny You’re Too Bad was a sheer delight justly met by a rapturous ovation as the boys were formally introduced and thanked. Of the many possible contenders for favourite track of the night, mine was Ivory Madonna, combining Wayne’s exquisite pitch-perfect vocals with the reedy, mellow, yet strong and stentorous brass tones of Stuart, James and Andy. This was like reggae wrapped in velvet! My Girl Lollipop came next with its unfortunate reminder that I am old enough to remember Millie’s chart-topping version of the early sixties and then, predictably enough, Red Red Wine closed this outstanding show with a quality which had not faltered in two hours. Any lingering January blues had long since evaporated in a euphoric performance which I rate as one of Plinston’s best ever – and I cannot believe I am alone in that view. True, the hall has seen bands of similar accomplishment before, but Johnny 2 Bad had managed to combine musical mastery with marvellous showmanship in a rare and heady blend. Come back soon? You bet! Wayne, Johnny Too Bad's new lead singer is brilliant vocal talant and a great guitarist too, loved it when he played the guitar solo's on "One in Ten" with the guitar over the back of his head Jimmy Hendrix style, 4kin ace!! I strongly advise everybody to go & see them, It would be unfair to say they are the best tribute band but they're definitely one of the best reggae bands touring the UK today!!. Once Johnny 2 Bad appeared I’m quite certain that not one member of the audience will have been disappointed with this outstanding Seven-piece UB40 band. Hits like One In Ten and Kingston Town evoked memories of early eighties politics and a golden era of white ska. A wicked three-piece brass section and a gifted frontman with a genuine feel for the music completed the most impressive of pictures for Johnny 2 Bad .
